Friends of SEKUCo, wherever you are,
The preparations of the programmes of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Science in Eco-tourism & Nature Conservation are in their final stages. We have received approval from the Tumaini University Senate for both curricula, and these have been submitted to the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) which allowed us to invite applicants for both programmes. As we await final approval of both curricula, we have already advertised the Law programme and received applications. This week we are going to advertise the programme of Eco-turism and Nature Conservation.

The success in preparing the curriculum of Bachelor of Science in eco-tourism and Nature Conservation is a result of fruitful cooperation etween SEKUCo and a group of professors and senior lecturers from Sokoine University of Agriculture. Parallel to curriculum preparations, we have received books and maps from the Geography departments of Bonn and Giessen universities, both in Germany. The signing of Cooperation Agreements between SEKUCo and respective faculties in four (4) universities is also an important achievement. Apart from Bonn and Giessen, we have also signed agreements with faculties working with Environment, Eco-tourism and Nature Conservation at PennState (USA) and Trondheim (Norway). Two fulltime senior lecturers, four part time professors and one turotial assistant are ready to start working. We have also ordered laboratory equipment for the initial courses. | As we continue to prepare for the launching of this programme, a Summer Institute is being prepared by PennState Univesity in collaboration with SEKUCo. It will take place from 3rd – 8th August 2008 at SEKUCo Campus A. While those coming from the northern hemisphere certainly have their summer vacations at this time of the year, the weather of Magamba during this time is quite cold. Professors and lecturers from PennState University and SEKUCo will work together with colleagues from Sokoine University of Agriculture and representatives from the Government working with Nature Conservation issues at national, regional and district levels. We have also invited representatives from our sister colleges in the Tumaini University family and stake-holders of tourism activities in Usambara area. The Summer Institutes are envisaged to be organized annually during the months of July and August using the SEKUCo buildings for the courses.
| | For this year, we have invited speakers who will deliver papers in the following themes:
- Ecotourism in Tanzania
- Nature and Environmental Conservation in Tanzania
- Teaching of an integrated curriculum in Nature Conservation and
- Ecotourism - Indigenous knowledge and participation of local communities in Nature Conservation and Eco-tourism
In coming years we hope to be able to invite students, the general public and friends like you to register and attend these institutes. | Otherwise it is vacation time! Our students who just completed their first academic year in the Bachelor of Education Special Needs programme have not yet started their vacations because they are doing their Teaching Practicals in different parts of our country. The exercise will continue until 8th August 2008. This year SEKUCo students are practicing in Secondary schools whereas after their second year they will be placed in special schools, inclusive schools and community programmes serving people who have disabilties. We have already received positive feedback from some of the places where our students are practising, and this is an encouragement to us working at SEKUCo.
| | We are going release the names of students for the new academic year 2008/2009. More than 400 have been admitted! The whole admission list has received final approval from the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). Please pray for the North Eastern Diocese, for us who work at SEKUCo, for the students who are doing their practicals and for the SEKUCo-PennState Summer Institute.
As we anticipate a large number of new students in September 2008, pray for them as well as for the preparations which are underway to ensure that they can live and study comfortably.
| | We thank God for giving us friends like you to support us in this great mission! Unity is truly a strength!
Yours in Christ,
Anneth |
