Bishop Dr. Sebastian Kolowa (1933-1992)

Our new University College is SEKUCo: Sebastian Kolowa University College.

Why the name Sebastian Kolowa?

The late Dr. Sebastian Kolowa was elected in 1972 and consecrated in 1974 as the first African Bishop of the NED. In 1976 he became Presiding Bishop of the ELCT. Bishop Dr. Kolowa held both positions until his death in October 1992. It is in honour of this renowned, and yet very humble servant of Jesus Christ, that the University College in our diocese is to be named.

Bishop Kolowa was a well-educated, wise man. He was also known for having a heart with compassion. It is therefore appropriate to have his name for a university college whose motto is: Acquire Knowledge, Serve with Compassion.

Sebastian Kolowa University College of Tumaini University shall consist of two campuses. We refer to the old former Usambara Trade School as Campus A and former Magamba Boys’ Secondary School as Campus B. Campus B is also the Main Campus.

Renovation of buildings began on 6th of February 2006. It is being carried out in two major phases and we have started with Campus A. The renovation of this Campus is expected to be completed by December 2006. There are several small dormitories at Campus A of different sizes. 9 of them are currently under renovation and they will have the capacity of accommodating 74 students. When all dormitories on this campus have been renovated, they will be able to accommodate 110 students. Image

On 1st of July 2006, the ceremony of handing back Campus B took place. Minor building rehabilitations have been carried out at Campus B in July and August. After December 2006, we will continue to renovate Campus B.

SEKUCo has two Administration Buildings, one on each campus. The renovation of the Administration Block at Campus A began on 16th of October. This block contains:

  • 1 Library
  • 1 Computer room
  • 1 Office for the Dean of the Faculty of Education
  • 7 Offices for staff members
  • 1 Board/Staff room
  • Toilets for staff
  • Toilets for students.

There are altogether 24 staff houses. Since they have been in use until February this year, most of them are in a good condition. The Engineer of the Diocese has already made a plan of renovating the houses that are worn out.

We have started to prepare furniture in order to ensure good quality of workmanship. Desks and chairs are currently being made, using metal bars and wooden tops, shelves, seats and backs. 200 desks were ordered by using part of the money that was collected during a Fundraising event held at Lushoto on 8th of July, 2006. Most of the contributors were Lushoto residents but they were joined by people of all ages from different parts of Tanzania, Germany, Sweden and USA.
