| The NED will soon start training for lay preachers. Preparations for this training have been completed and can start at any time. The purpose of the training is to equip lay preachers who form majority of preachers in the NED. The NED has more that 600 (six hundred) worship places whereas more are still being opened. Looking at this figure against the number of pastors and evangelists one could realise that lay preachers form almost 50% of the preachers in our congregations. |
The NED is among the dioceses that face a big shortage of ordained ministers. This situation has put pastors in a situation of running around the congregations in order at lease to offer the pastoral services required while at the same performing the administration duties of the congregations they take care of. In this situation the function of evangelists and lay preachers has become of great importance especially in reaching out people with worship services, ministry of preaching and teaching, attending to the daily needs of the sub – congregations. While the NED is doing all it can to train pastors on the one hand, it also sees the need to equip those who are taking care of the work at the moment. Furthermore, the NED feels that it is a blessing to have both the ordained ministers and lay preachers in the service of God to our fellow human beings.
|
The program will have two parts: the first will be to prepare trainers
who will be working within the districts. The second part will be the
training of the lay preachers. This is a three years program out of
which we expect to transform the competence of the lay preachers. Apart
from strengthening competence the program will also motivate lay people
to join the ministry of preaching and teaching the word of God.
