The NED has started an in-service training for its pastors. Seven pastors are now in the second week of their courses. The course is structured in different groups according to varying criteria of the candidates. Therefore, after this first group the second group of about the same number will be taken. The duration of the courses is ten weeks. This whole period of training is what is called a semester for in-service training. Most of our pastors do not have the opportunity for academic training after their formal theological training. As a result they end up in a situation whereby their input to the service they render to the church and society deteriorates as time goes on. It is due to our realization of this situation that the NED decided to plan for such training. This kind of training will continue on and on because we believe that it is needed for the capacity building of the pastors.
The current expenses of this training are covered by the NED and the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) in which the NED is a member. It is our hope that UEM will continue to support this kind of training in the future. These courses will become part of the SEKUCo programs under the department of theology and ethics soon after its official opening on the 28th October 2007. For that continuous commitment we need long term committed partners as well.
The aim of the training is thus to strengthen the abilities of the pastors in order to raise the efficiency of the performance in their daily work. In addition to this the training intends to motivate the pastors so that they may see the importance of education in their work. The training covers a wide range of courses like theology, communication skills, leadership and administration skills.  While still in the second week we have noticed some changes during the class discussions that much more constructive ideas are coming up than in the beginning of the courses.
Teachers of these courses are academically qualified for teaching the different subjects planned for the semester. Those whom are teaching at the moment are from within the diocese selected from among the theologians and other specialties. Teachers from outside the country are expected to join the academic staff for the coming semesters in order to strengthen the training. These will function by way of block teaching. Efforts are underway to open the courses to other diocese and churches inside and outside the country. Keep on praying for this good work which has already started.
