Stage for the Church General Assembly or Church Synod for the North Eastern Diocese is set.  The synod will be held on the 8th -10th February 2006. The Representatives from congregations and institutions will arrive on the 07-02-2006.  This is the 7th Synod after centurion which will hold about 170 voting representatives.  The venue for the meeting is the Lutheran Cathedral in Lushoto town.

What is the Mandate and Representation?
The Synod meeting is the highest decision making body of the diocese. For that reason this is a very important meeting which makes decision about the life and work of the church. The last Synod meeting was held about two years ago at the same place. The number of representatives in that previous meeting was about 170. Compared to the number of representatives this year, one could easily recognize that there is an increase of representatives.
The formula of representation is such that;
  • For each Parish with 600-1000 church members there is one representative. The bigger the number the more the representatives
  • All Pastors are members of the Synod Assembly to which there are about 85 (22 retired) Pastors.
  • All heads of institutions and departments.
The increase of representatives can thus be explained on the basis of the above categories. To a large extent the increase of representatives is due to the increase of church members as a result of the growth of the church. However, there is a small increase of pastors and a small increase of representation from institutions. Another point worth mentioning is that the number of lay representatives is bigger than clergy man and women sitting in the Synod Assembly.
What is the content?
As the timetable shows there is an opening services with holy communion. After that the meeting will start with roll call and orientation to the agenda material, information, introduction and greetings; the bishop’s report; current issues and projects, etc.  There will also be an election for the assistant to the bishop- please pray for this!
What about Guests?
There will be guests who are invented. Those who have confirmed their attendance are among others are the Presiding Bishop Dr. Samson Mushemba, Bishop Elisa Buberwa from the North Western Diocese who will lead the Bible Study and the Ag. General Secretary of the ELCT Hon Brighton Kilewa.
Last but not least we will have as guest of honour Capt (retired) Jaka Mwambi who is the Regional Commissioner of Tanga. We thank all those who have been praying for this meeting and ask to keep on praying for it.
