These words were spoken by Rev. Jonathan Mwamboza at the 100 year anniversary of Luthindi Mental Hospital at November 1, 2004.

According to the Hospital source of information, Lutindi mental Hospital formally was the center to keep the sons and daughters of Africans who were liberated by Germany Government from slave trade in 1896. In 1904 the founder of this center, Mr. Wilhelm Bokermann, changed the mission and decided to offer mental health service. This was the first mental Hospital in East Africa.

The need for this service is high but due to the resources the Hospital is trying to accommodate not more than 100 patients though some times the number used to rise up to 120. Today the hospital has 45 Patients who live at the center permanently and 60 patient who gets treatment for three month and go home says Frank Maas, the Hospital Administrative officer.

According to Mr. J.G. Dilli, Head of the Hospital, the number of patients is increasing due to the use of drugs such as cocaine and marijuana especially among young people. He added that most of the patients are referred to Lutindi from their Hospitals. However big number of them come from Dar-es-Salaam, Arusha, Dodoma, Moshi and few from other places.

Rev. Dr. Stephen Munga, the Bishop of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, North Eastern Diocese, used his opportunity to speak to thank the brothers and sisters from Germany - especially those from Bethel - who were there from the initiation of this mission up til today when this mission celebrates it's 100th anniversary. This shows that we have been walking together for a hundred year in helping one other to make sure this mission goes on, so that the name of God is glorified through the mission he started by using his people, bishop Munga stated.
