Five special teachers of the Wichernschule in Minden spent two weeks at the Rainbow School this summer. The Wichernschule is a school for intellectual impaired children in Minden/ Germany supported by the Diakonisches Werk Minden. As a partner school of Rainbow we are accompaning the project from the very beginning. We were looking forward to see what has been built up so far and - of course - to meet our friend Robert Shehaghilo the head teacher at Rainbow. Last year he spent six weeks in Minden to have a close look on our kind of work with handicapped children. Image

Right from the start we felt the warm welcome and we started working together with the staff of Rainbow for these days. The children were really the same as our pupils so that it was easy to get in contact by playing, singing and dancing. After school we met in working groups with the teachers and teaching assistants, where we discussed different ideas about the work with handicapped children. Our Tanzanian friends had many questions about our way of teaching. We exchanged experiences about the same work in a completely different culture and surrounding and in despite of the various conditions of our education. For us it was a big gain to get a new view on our own work.

We took part on a parents' meeting. It was impressive to hear the parents talking about the development of their children since they are visiting Rainbow. One father said: My son has learned to know who he is. Isn't that a strong sentence? Others told us that their children became more independent. One girl began to wash her clothes unassisted, another boy now is helping to clean the house, one child is able to dress herself, many of them have learned to sing new songs ... We were also invited to visit some of the pupils' homes to see the life conditions and to hear their individual life stories. The parents showed us their thankfulness for having the advantage to send their children to this special kind of school.
After these short two weeks we had to say Good bye to our friends, the children and the Rainbow staff, being sure our partnership is just beginning.
