Overview over Rainbow School

Image

By naming the rooms according to colour, it will be easy for the pupils to get a good orientation of the school building. Therefore, the green room will have that name because it will have light green wall-paint. The curtains will not have to be purely green; instead, the basic colour will be green while the motives on them (e.g. flowers or birds) might have other colours. The same plan applies for the orange, pink, yellow and purple rooms as well as the Rainbow Hall.

  • White room: This room will have white wall-paint. It will be used for painting activities
  • Yellow room: Occupational therapy and physiotherapy
  • Pink room: Library
  • Orange room: Music therapy
  • Green room: Physiotherapy
  • Purple room: Speech therapy
  • Rainbow Hall: Dining room and multipurpose hall.
  • Carpentry workshops: There are two carpentry workshops. Carpentry work will be part of occupational therapy.
  • Cookery classroom: The pupils will have cookery lessons whereby they will be taught about diet and how to make simple meals. This is also part of occupational therapy.
  • Classrooms 1 to 3: These are going to be used for ordinary class lessons such as Mathematics, Reading & Writing, Biology, etc. One of these classrooms is bigger than the other two and will be used as the computer pool of the pupils.
  • Quiet rooms 1 and 2: These rooms will be used to calm down and counsel pupils when they become restless or hyperactive due to anxiety. They will also be used for resting.
  • Swimming pool: Near the pupils’ home there is a swimming pool. This will be the site for “aqua-therapy”.
  • Pupils’ home: As stated above, some of the pupils are expected to come from ICH and from Lushoto district. These are going to live at their homes (see section “c” below). The pupils’ home will be used by those whose homes are far away from Lushoto.
  • Offices 1 to 3: These are going to be used by the teaching staff.
  • Dispensary: For minor illnesses, a nurse will help the pupils with necessary treatment. Fortunately, the district hospital is located in Lushoto town. Therefore the pupils will be able to receive more advanced treatment if they get seriously ill.
  • Kitchen 1: In this kitchen, we are going to use electricity and, if possible, bio-gas for fuel.
  • Kitchen 2: Two types of stoves are to be used here: one for firewood and another for charcoal.
  • Banana and vegetable gardens: The fruits are going to be used primarily by the pupils. Surplus fruits will be sold and the income will be useful to the school. At the moment there are three avocado trees, two oxen-heart trees and several guava trees. For the bananas, there are about 30 plants of different types; some are for cooking while others are to be eaten as ripe fruits. The vegetable garden will be prepared when the school is about to be opened.
  • Biblical garden: In the middle of the school compound, there will be a garden. The plants that will be planted in this garden have some linkage to the Bible - either they are mentioned in the Bible or they have got biblical names or they have been associated with biblical events. For example, Euphorbia milii is called “Christ’s crown of thorns” whereas the white lily is associated with Jesus words in Matthew 6:28-30.

When the renovation has been completed, the building will be furnished. We expect to prepare most of the furniture at Usambara Technological Centre, an institution that operates under the ELCT-NED.
