BIFED is Bishops Fund for Education and Development.

The fund was established in 2003 with the following objectives:
• To help children who can not afford to pay school fees.
• To give grants to youth to pursue different entrepreneurial training.
• To help education services which are provided by the community.
• To strengthen Christians ethics.

However, the objectives can be met also by collaborating with Government of Tanzania and different district councils within diocese coverage.

SOURCES OF BIFED FUND
The main sources of fund for the BIFED are:
• Diocesan members through self contributions.
• Contributions from friends from different religions and denominations.
• From all members of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT).
• Contributions from friends all over the world.
• Investment of BIFED funds in different fast income generating projects such as purchases of shares in different companies.
• To apply for soft loan and grants from different sources within and outside of the country.
MANAGEMENT OF BIFED
BIFED is managed by the board of trustees. Its members are selected by the executive Council of the Diocese and it serves for four years with possible of renewal for three terms only.
ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FOR ASSISTANCE
Eligible institutes or candidates for assistance from BIFED are:
• Schools or education centre
• North Eastern Diocese (NED) parishes.
• Active Christians from parishes of NED
• Groups from parishes.
• Community groups in the diocese
• Social Development centre
• Community association which work on education within diocese.
Currently there are many individual and institutions which have benefited from BIFED. 11 individuals have been assisted, renovation of SeKUCO, Bangala Lutheran Junior Seminary ‘A’ level preparation and Irente School for the Blind. In total more than 15 million have been used since operations started.
PROSPECTIVE COMMITMENTS
Since the BIFED fund is eligible to develop the selected candidates (say poor people) then it has a great role in the Society as a whole. The recent inaugurated Sebastian Kolowa University College (SEKUCO) calls also for such eligible students to be assisted through BIFED, thus it has a long way to go before accomplishing its objectives taking into account the prevailing small donations available.
A sort of revolving fund (in terms of investments) has to be established later on so that it becomes sustaining fund in the future.
